Two second-half goal made all the difference as Blackhall Gaels overcame Seneschalstown in the final of the Killoe Developments sponsored Division 2 FL decider at Dunsany on Sunday.

Blackhall Gaels …… 2-6
Seneschalstown ….. 0-8

Having trailed by 0-2 to 0-5 at the break, Blackhall Gaels conceded another point before David Carty put his name to their first goal four minutes after the restart.
Anthony Moyles played a key role in the build-up, winning primary possession at midfield and then pushing forward to lay off the final pass. The county player also set up Tadhg Brosnan for the point that gave Blackhall Gaels the lead for the second and final time in the 53rd minute.

The outcome was still in the balance until substitute Robert Cox poked the ball to the net after a bit of ping-pong around the Seneschalstown goal. Another replacement Declan Dalton extended the advantage before Joe Sheridan landed a consolation point from a free in the final seconds.

Brosnan announced his return from suspension with the opening score which took 11 minutes to arrive as both sides struggled on the heavily sanded pitch in the early exchanges.

After Brian Clarke levelled matters, Seneschalstown had the better of the second quarter and finished the half with points from Brian Clarke(free) and Damien Sheridan to lead by 0-5 to 0-2 at the break.

Joe Sheridan didn’t join the until near the end of the first quarter after being delayed in traffic en route from Dublin, while Alan Nestor didn’t figure for Blackhall after picking up a knock the previous Sunday.

Seneschalstown might have had a goal in the run-up to half time but Brian Clarke fired low and wide on the run after taking a pass from Gary Conlon. Seconds earlier Anthony Moyles tried to finish to the net soccer style after being put through by Mark Ferris but his scuffed attempt was cleared.

When Brian Clarke, the only Seneschalstown player to score more than once, pointed his third free in the 39th minute, it was 0-7 to 1-2. But they didn’t score again until it was too late.

Their task was made all the more difficult following the dismissal of Stephen Dillon, on a straight red card in the 47th minute with the sides deadlocked at 0-7 to 1-4.

After the game Cyril Creavin, assistant secretary of the County Committee, presented the Michael Gaughan Cup to the winning captain, Anthony Moyles.
