St.Coca’s athlete Nathan Murphy captured the boys u-17, 1500m Leinster Walking gold medal at the new indoor arena at Athlone on Sunday last, the 10th of March. Murphy (15) from Kilcock finished in an impressive time of 7mins 58′, beating Alan Mooney of Kilkenny Harriers into 2nd place, while lapping the majority of the field in the process.

Sunday’s medal took the Scoil Dara students impressive all-time haul of Leinster golds to seven and qualifies him for the All-Irelands at the same venue on March 23rd. Murphy, who also walks competively for his school and is part of the Leinster Regional Performance Squad, is currently on a rich vein of form, having just missed out on a bronze medal over 3000m at the Junior All-Irelands, finishing a creditable fourth place, when many would have thought he was punching well above his weight.

Murphy Knows the level of competition is sure to be greater (than the Leinsters’) in two weeks time when he will lock horns with lads from all across the country and has grown up racing against: “I know if I train hard, I will be up there with a good chance of claiming the gold. But you can never underestimate these lads, I’ve raced against them all at some stage over the last five years and on their day they all have what it takes. I will have to be at the top of my game”. Murphy concluded: “I owe a lot to my trainer Bobby King who dedicates so much hard work and time for my cause. He will be pushing me on over the coming days and it’s just up to me to respond in the right fashion” Victory on Saturday week in Athlone’s new state of the art indoor arena would see Murphy claim his fourth All-Ireland gold. You wouldn’t bet against it happening.
