Blackhall Gaels GAA – Book Launch ‘The Spirit of the Gaels’

By Robert Cox

Blackhall Gaels GAA club launched the second edition of their book ‘Spirit of the Gaels’ at Batterstown club house on Saturday last 7th of December. The book, which takes in the last ten years 2003-2013, was launched by local councillor Brian Fitzgerald.

Club chairman Gerry Stenson explained the background and history of a book that holds a special place in the heart of all Gaels and how the idea for the first edition came about ten years ago; “Ten years ago Blackhall Gaels was riding on the crest of a wave. On the field of play the club had just been crowned Meath Senior Football Champions, Intermediate Ladies Champions and Féile All-Ireland Div4 Hurling Champions. Buoyed by this (and by his innate enthusiasm for all things literary, cultural, traditional and GAA) the late Michael Lillis, who was chairman at the time, kick started a unique project. The objective was to capture for posterity the spirit of a young Club which was only eight years in existence – a spirit he referred to as “The Spirit of the Gaels”. A quality publication, which was written by club members and which embodied the essence of Blackhall Gaels, followed”.

So on the back of the success of that first edition, the club members put together this second edition which continues the story the late great Michael Lillis put together up to the end of 2003. Stenson added; “Ten years on, the same high profile silverware may not be wintering in the club. Nevertheless, that indefinable spirit which might have flagged at times, but was never lost, has been re-energised”.

The book, which can be purchased at Clarke’s shop Kilcloon for €10.00, remembers Mr.Lillis fondly as well as some other club greats that have passed away in the past ten years.
