|Owner Darren Byrne on board Rio Delalgo|
By Robert Cox
With The Galway Festival drawing to a close today, there is plenty of local interest in the Meath/Kildare area to report on. Of course we all know of the big success of the Moynalvey based trainer Tony Martin winning the €183,000 Galway Hurdle on Thursday with Quick Jack as well as scooping a treble on Friday and a double today to make it six wins in total. Fran Berry rode three of those winners for Martin.
Kilcock’s Robbie Downey had two rides this week at Galway, finishing 5th in both, including a good run under Brendan Bracken in Tuesday’s Topaz Mile.
And whilst one of Martin’s trained winners was for successful owner JP McManus, the latter better watch out as there is a new kid in town in the shape of Kilcock based owner Darren Byrne. Byrne’s mare Rio Delalgo finished a very creditable 4th in The Ladbrokes `Your Sport Your Way` Bumper over 2m on Saturday evening. She was the only mare in the race and ran a great race under JJ Codd at a price of 25/1. There is plenty more to come from this Vincent Ward trained daughter of Captain Rio (GB) and Lady Taipan. Ward also trains just outside Kilcock.
Well done to all involved. If anyone has information of any other locally trained/owned/ridden horses in the last week please let me know.
